Crazy People Go To Therapy

My P.I.C. Leah

This week, at work, we had our yearly team summit for our teams of excellence- it was 70’s theme: Solid Gold (hence the top picture outfits). I used to co-host this back in the day… fun pictures for reference! (Side note, my co-host has since went on to become a VP, and I’m just a VIP at our Regional Cancer Center!)

Every year at the summit, we have a guest speaker. This year’s speaker had me in tears after three minutes in and I’m not sure I ever fully stopped for the remaining 45 minutes he told his story.

While his message was extremely powerful and focused on patient care from the “other side of the stethoscope,” I took away two meaningful phrases he said that hit me hard.

Number 1. “Hurting people hurt people.”

Read it again. Hurting people hurt people. Wow. For so many years of my life this makes sense. While I was emotionally hurting, I tried to deflect my pain by hurting  others. Others who mean a lot to me. I said horrible, terrible things to multiple people throughout my 20’s. Jake, my parents, and my brother top the list, but it goes all the way through extended family, down to strangers and acquaintances. Hurting people hurt people. Guilty.

Number 2. “They say crazy people go to therapy, nah, smart people go to therapy.”

Yes! Louder for those in the back!

Some days I forget the real reason I started this blog. Unfortunately, it’s turned into the Memoirs of Malignant Mandy for the past year, but my whole purpose of my message will remain the same forever… GO. TO. THERAPY.

Everyone deserves a therapist. It’s the coolest thing ever… you actually get to talk about anything with no judgement, and they can’t tell anyone, ever!! They’re the real MVP! The world’s best secret keepers.

And should you choose to seek advice, they’re there for that too!

Therapy is so freeing. Therapy is the coolest hobby I can think of! I get to tell all my jokes to my therapist and he has to laugh! A therapist is your own personal cheerleader! And I love it.

If you’ve been thinking about talking to someone, do it! Be smart… after all, smart people go to therapy!

If you’re afraid to make the call, let me. Let your best friend. Let your primary doc. Just make the appointment! Not sure where to start? Message me, I’ve created a pretty decent list of resources!

And we all know I’m a therapy-for-lifer, but that doesn’t mean you are or have to be. Go once, just once. Feel it out, and see what’s right for you. Some of my friends have gone for 2-3 months and felt better. Another is 8 months in and loving it. Another used it to help her through a divorce, and another the death of his parent at a young age. Everyone can somehow benefit for it. There is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. You’re being… smart!

But crazy people go to therapy, too! I’m proof!!
